PCB Circuit Board Film
PCB circuit board film is a critical document used to define circuits, hole positions and other features during the manufacturing process of Printed Circuit Boards(PCBs).It usually contains the pattern design and production information of each layer of the circuit board, and is transferred to the PCB substrate through optical exposure technology.
In the PCB manufacturing process,PCB film is essentially an intermediary that accurately replicates design patterns(such as copper circuits, pads, hole positions, etc.)onto the PCB substrate.Typically, this is achieved by printing the design patterns onto a transparent film(plastic film),which displays optical patterns consistent with the PCB design.
These patterns are used to expose different layers of the PCB,and finally the circuit board is manufactured through processes such as etching and stripping.Film files are usually generated by CAD design software(such as Altium Designer,Eagle,etc.).

Working Principle of PCB Film
1. Design Output
Designers draw each layer of the circuit board(such as top copper, bottom copper, silkscreen layer, solder mask layer, etc.)using PCB design software. After the design is completed, the software generates the corresponding film files.
2. Optical Exposure
The film files are printed onto transparent film material to serve as a"template".During the PCB manufacturing process, the film files are transferred to the photosensitive layer of the circuit board through optical exposure technology, forming the corresponding circuit patterns.
3. Subsequent Processes
After exposure, the unexposed photosensitive coating is etched away, leaving a precise circuit pattern that forms copper circuits, pads and other structures, completing the manufacturing of one layer.
Composition of PCB Film
A complete set of PCB film files usually includes the following layers:
1. Copper Layer Film
Contains all copper circuits, pads and other structures on the circuit board, used to define the copper layer during the etching process.
2. Silkscreen Layer Film
Depicts identification information on the circuit board(such as component labels, text, symbols, etc.),which is usually screen-printed on the surface of the circuit board.
3. Solder Mask Layer Film
Indicates the solder mask ink pattern on the PCB,usually used to cover areas that do not require welding to prevent short circuits.
4. Drilling Layer Film
Shows the positions where holes need to be drilled on the circuit board, including through holes and blind holes.
5. Electrical and Test Layer Film
Used to verify electrical connections and test the connectivity of circuits.
Types of PCB Film
1. Single-layer Film
Used for single-sided PCB designs with only one copper layer, usually without too many complex layers.
2. Double-layer Film
Used for double-sided PCB designs, the film files include copper layers on both sides and related connection holes.
3. Multi-layer Film
Used for multi-layer PCB designs, the film files contain multiple copper layers, interlayer connections and other characteristic layers.
4. Reverse Film
Also known as negative film,it is the opposite of ordinary film:the black part represents the area to be etched, while the white part represents the area not to be etched.
Features of PCB Film
1. High Precision
The precision of PCB film directly affects the quality of the circuit board.Accurate film ensures that the position of each circuit, pad and hole strictly meets the design requirements.
2. High Transparency
Film materials must have high transparency to allow light to pass through and accurately expose the photosensitive coating on the PCB substrate.
3. Reusability
A once-produced film file can be used multiple times, making film indispensable in mass production.
Application Fields of PCB Film
PCB film is widely used in:
1. Electronic Product Manufacturing:
Production of circuit boards for consumer electronics such as mobile phones, computers and home appliances.
2. Industrial Control Systems:
Circuit board design for industrial systems such as automation equipment and instruments.
3. Medical Equipment:
Circuit boards for high-precision medical devices.
